In 1961 Škoda factory of Plzeň delivered 30 locomotives of the class EU05 to the Polish railways PKP. After a change of gear ratio and also the maximum speed the locomotives obtained the new class EP05. Only EP05-16 and EP05-23 locomotives survived in regular operation to the new millennium, but both ones were put out of order in 2008 (see End of class EP05 PKP Cargo operation
). While EP05-16 owned by PKP Cargo is still waiting for the next destiny, in case of EP05-23 the owner (PKP Intercity) decided to repair the locomotive to be operational again.
In winter 2017 Remtrak company in Warszawa Grochów workshop started the repair of the locomotive, which included especially renovation of the body shell and later also a new livery. After these works in July the locomotive was transported to Gdańsk, where in ZNTKiM works next refurbishments will be carried out (e.g. mechanical parts, electrical and brake equipment). PKP Intercity is thinking about using of the repaired locomotive especially for special trains haulage. However, also an operation on regular trains is not excluded, because the carrier suffers from shortage of locomotives with the maximum speed 160 km/h.
In the picture taken on 18 July 2017 in Gdańsk Kanał Kaszubski station the locomotive EP05-23 is caught in the new livery before its shunting into the ZNTKiM workshop.
