In July 2004 The Slovenian railways S ordered a series of the tri-current (3 kV DC; 15 kV, 16,7 Hz AC; 25 kV, 50 Hz AC) electric locos of type ES 64 U4 by Siemens Transportation Systems with total of 20. In S, the series is going to be signed as 541-1 class (as similar to the 1216 ÖBB series).
I November 2005, the first built 541-101 loco undergone the trial runs on the test circuit in Cerhenice, the Czech Republic, together with the Re 474.010 for SBB-CFF-FFS. In Slovenia the 541-101 arrived on 10 December 2005. Then on 21t January 2006 it was transported back to the Cerhenice circuit to be further tested. The batch production of this series started in late 2005. The deliveries would proceed subsequently during June 2006 and March 2008.
The picture taken on 21t January 2006 at Salzburg-Gnigl station shows the 541-101 already having final livery with stickers making the original red coating complete.
