Estonian railways today
The Estonian state railways (Eesti Raudtee – EVR) were re-established in 1992. The company operated infrastructure and both passenger and freight service. In the second half of 90s the company was gradually divided into several companies. The article closely describes the current situation on Estonian metals. The dominant part of freight transport is operated by EVR, but now several competitive private companies owned by Russians has also a significant share of the market. That’s why the future of EVR is vague, probably the company will be sold and the infrastructure part of the company will come back to ownership of the state. The passenger services are ensured by three companies: private Edelaraudtee operates DMUs all over Estonia, state-owned Elektriraudtee operates EMUs in the suburb of the capitol city of Tallinn and private GoRail (former EVR Ekspress) operates international train Tallinn – Moscow. Elektriraudtee is preparing a purchase of new DMUs to compete against Edelaraudtee.
