New and refurbished EMUs in Poland
After years of stagnation, when Polish state railways PKP neither bought new electric vehicles for suburban transport nor did modernization of older vehicles, in last two years there has come a boom of modernization of these vehicles.
Probably the most interesting new Polish vehicle is triplex partially low-floor EMU of the class ED59. It was manufactured by Pojazdy Szynowe PESA Bydgoszcz for the Authority of the The Łódź Voivodship. The EMU with commercial name „Acatus“ (Latin name of Łódź) has factory mark 15WE.
In 2005 and 2006 the rolling stock operated by PKP Przewozy Regionalne was extended by four new partially low floor electric railcar of the class EN81. Mechanical part of these railcars was manufactured also by PESA, traction equipment was delivered by MEDCOM.
In 2005 the company NEWAG Spóka Akcyjna Nowy Sącz (former ZNTK Nowy Sącz) started to refurbish EMUs of the class EN57, which had been manufactured by PAFAWAG Wrocław. The refurbished EMUs of the type 14WE have new bodywork on the original vehicle frame and boogies.
Since 2006 PESA with the cooperation of ZNTK Mińsk Mazowiecki a NEWAG Nowy Sącz makes different type of modernization of the class EN57. These refurbished EMUs (numbered EN57-2000) have the original bodywork with new head and completely modernized interior.
